Cheddar Caves & Gorge
We offer you a warm welcome to one of Britain’s favourite places, a 360-acre nature reserve in the heart of the Somerset countryside.
You’ll see dramatic Ice Age scenery below ground in our two showcaves, Gough’s and Cox’s, before climbing the 274 steps for a rewarding country walk round the top of Britain’s biggest gorge, above the country’s highest limestone cliffs, home to rare species such as Horseshoe bats, Peregrine falcons, dormice and Cheddar pinks.
Your hunter-gatherer ancestors lived here for 40,000 years, and now you can relive their struggle for survival in the Stone Age with hands-on demonstrations in our Cheddar Man & the Cannibals Museum of Prehistory.
Ancient myths and legends live on in The Crystal Quest, our homage to JRR Tolkien, who used Cheddar Caves as his model for ‘Helm’s Deep’ in ‘The Lord of the Rings’. But if you really want to get to grips with limestone scenery, our RockSport caving, climbing and abseiling sessions will help you find out more about that and about yourself.
