Old Sarum
Old Sarum - The Original Salisbury. High above Salisbury Plain stands Old Sarum, the site of the ancient city of Salisbury. A visit to Old Sarum is a discovery journey through history, following in the footsteps of Neolithic hunters, Iron Age tribes, Romans, Saxons and Normans, all of whom lived on this windswept hilltop for over 5000 years.
William the Conqueror was a frequent visitor and part of the Doomsday Book was written here. Two palaces and a great cathedral were built and Old Sarum grew into one of the most flourishing settlements in Medieval England. The people of Wessex continued to live at Sarum until the 16th century when it crumbled into decay.
In the 19th century it was one of the most notorious ‘rotten boroughs’ as a succession of powerful men purchased the land so that they could sit in parliament as the MP for Old Sarum.
Today Old Sarum is in the guardianship of English Heritage. The massive earth ditches and ramparts remain intact affording spectacular views across to the new cathedral at Salisbury and the surrounding landscape. It is renowned as a special events venue, playing host to a great programme of re-enactments, knights tournaments, and living history entertainment throughout the summer season.
